Dominic Bowen – Running 2000 miles for The Stroke Association

At the Medal Hanger Shop we like to learn what motivates our customers to race. Last year we kept in touch with Adam who undertook 15 marathons across the World in 2015 for the sheer hell of it, and this year is Dominic’s turn.

This Sunday Dominic starts a 2000 mile endeavour to raise money for The Stroke Association.  His family have first hand experience of the devastating effects of a stroke on its victims.  Dominic’s Mum is currently recovering in hospital and working hard to overcome the post-stroke paralysis in her left side.

Dominic will line up at this year’s Great North Run for the first 13.1 miles of his 2000 mile total, which eventually concludes at the finish line of the Robin Hood Marathon in September 2017.

After getting in touch with us with his story, we went for a lie down before asking Dom the following running-related questions.

  1. Favourite post race meal: It’s got to be a good ribeye steak and chips and a pint of beer.
  2. Best medal and why: That’s an easy one Robin Hood Marathon September 2014, it was my first ever marathon and I’d only been running properly since January 2014. Oh and it spins!!!
  3. Worst race you’ve ever entered and why: Wollaton Park 10K 2016 – I was carrying an injury so had to go really careful and the goodie bag at the end was shocking, I got a gel, a bottle of water and a pair of small ladies running shorts. It was so funny, when I posted it on the Facebook group Running The Distance somebody commented they knew which race straight away as they had got the vest that matched the shorts!!  (He sent us the photo, they are truly awful)
  4. Describe your running style in 3 words: Tall, Gangly, Mover
  5. Complete the sentence, I won’t run when… it’s past my bedtime, I like to be tucked up in bed by 10:30pm at the very latest to get up at 5:30am to go for a run…
  6. Next Race: Great North Run, first time doing it.

You can keep up to date with Dominic’s progress on his Facebook page @justanotherrunner78, where you can also enter his online raffle to win, amongst other things, one of our very own Love to Run medal displays.  Dominic is also part of the Facebook running group Running The Distance  where he’ll be posting regular updates.

And to donate to The Stroke Association you can text BOWE47 £5 to 70070.

Good luck Dom, we look forward to hearing how you get on and which race wins your heart (if not your legs) in the next 12 months.
